Chapter 9

Move out! came the telepathic order from Captain Wyatt. Each regiment emerged from their respective tunnels into the city. Alyson and I emerged alongside the Captain and his best men less than ten blocks from the center of the city. We walked openly down the street in broad daylight. The smattering of Enualians that saw us did not even attempt to fight, instead running back to their defenses.

By the time we reached the base of the tower, there was a blockade of troops positioned before us. The tower behind them was collapsing. A chain of explosions rocking the entire building. Standing at the base of the tower was Commander McClain. He stared up at the collapsing tower, then looked back at the approaching army. Despite the distance, the rage on his face was evident.

Captain Wyatt called for a stop 50 yards away from the blockage. Touching a gem on his sleeve, it glowed with a soft blue light and the Captain spoke with a magnified voice. "Surrender Commander McClain, and we will let you live. You have nowhere to run now. If you fight, you will die! My troops have surrounded you and the tower is falling!"

"Kill them all!" Commander McClain ordered, and the fighting began in earnest, Troops streamed out of the surrounding buildings and joined the fray as Captain Wyatt lead the return charge against the invaders.

Once the fighting began, Alyson lost herself in her magic. She took a handful of seeds from a pouch on her belt and threw them at the oncoming soldiers. They landed at the soldier's feet and she incanted, "Earth Leafspeak Grow Strengthen and Obey." Three maneating plants sprouted from the ground, reaching out to swallow the nearest soldiers.

The soldiers tried to hack at the plants but the cuts quickly healed, sealing closed with some sort of sap. The soldiers were melted in acid before they could do anything to stop it.

Before they were even consumed, Alyson had already turned to her next target. "Earth Geo Hole Earth Geo Close," she incanted. The ground opened beneath three soldiers who were brandishing their blades in the opposite direction. They fell into the hole and it closed over them.

Recognizing the threat, the nearest soldiers turned to her with their own incantations on their lips. Before they could finish their incantations, I finished my own. "Spirit Mind Break," came the words and the soldiers before me looked around in confusion, their words lost on their tongues. They too found spears, swords, and daggers cutting into their various body parts.

For every Enualian that fell, two more took their place. I knew if we were going to win this fight, I was going to have to go all out. "Alyson, protect me!" I called for help.

She ran over, chanting the words as she ran, "Earth Geo Form Shield and Strengthen." The ground rose up and formed a barrier between us and much of the Enualian army.

"I haven't had time to try this spell yet," I admitted with a laugh.
